FACULTY OF CHEMISTRY AND TECHNOLOGY
|
![]() |
Faculty of Chemistry and Technology is an institution of higher education carrying out educational and research activities in the scientific fields of chemistry and chemical engineering, teaching courses in chemical technology at both undergraduate and graduate level. It also offers a postgraduate scientific study course.
The Faculty was established in 1960 as a part
of the
The teaching programmes of the Faculty have been constantly updated and are comparable with the programmes worldwide. The last adjustment of the programmes was made in 2005 in accordance with the Bologna Declaration propositions implemented in the new Scientific Activity and Higher Education Law.
Since the academic year 2005/06 and after the review was carried out, 5 study programmes have been organized at the FCT, and these are:
- Organic chemistry and biochemistry;
- Environmental chemistry
- Materials;
- Environmental protection;
- Mediterranean cultures
- Chemical technology and materials;
- Food technology
Undergraduate studies last for 3 years and upon completion students receive 180 credits. Following the submission of the final paper, the studies are completed and the certificate and the academic title of Bachelor of Chemistry, or Bachelor Engineer of Chemical Technology is awarded (According to the Academic and Professional Titles and Academic Grade Law).
The undergraduate study of chemistry enables leaving the system of education after acquiring basic knowledge of chemistry needed for the first professional employment, reducing the time of studying with the aim of better organization of study and directing the students to dominantly one scientific field (chemistry) and continuation of the study of chemistry at graduate level or continuation of studies in related fields.
The undergraduate study of chemical technology provides basic engineering knowledge required for conducting sustainable chemical processes in the production of materials and products for specific purposes, as well as the knowledge of the methods of quality investigations and the analysis of processes. Students are qualified to participate in fast changes in technological developments and work in small and medium-size businesses. In the course of the study special attention is paid to practical work, which enables the students, as soon as they finish the study, to join the working process in various industrial branches (chemical, metal, shipbuilding, construction, food, pharmaceutical and other industries). After they finish the study, the students can continue their education at the graduate study of the Faculty of Chemical Technology or at some other graduate studies of related faculties.
Graduate studies (to be carried out in the academic year 2008/09) last for 2 years and upon completion students receive 120 ECTS credits. Following the submission and defence of the final paper/thesis, the studies are completed and the diploma and the academic title of Master of Chemistry, or Master Engineer of Chemical Technology is awarded.
The development of educational programmes of
chemistry through the courses of the graduate study of chemistry harmonizes
economic aspirations of
The aim of the University graduate study of chemical technology is to reinforce individual abilities of students so that they can competently respond to the challenges of new technological developments. The study is applicable to all branches of economy and various scientific fields and is fundamental for successful entrepreneurship. After they finish the study, students can be employed with the acquired knowledge in chemical, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, metal, construction, shipbuilding and other industries, on the jobs of quality protection, marketing, management, recycling and disposal of waste, and other jobs requiring qualification and knowledge obtained during the studies. Following the completion of undergraduate studies, students can continue their education at the postgraduate study of the Faculty of Chemical Technology or at some other postgraduate studies of related faculties.
Professional studies last 5 semesters, and upon completion students receive 150 ECTS credits. Following the submission of the final paper, the studies are completed and the certificate and the title of Professional Bachelor of Chemical Technology is awarded. The professional study, by its concept and content, essentially differs from the undergraduate university study. In theoretical part of teaching, the students of this study adopt the basic principles and laws of the process control in chemical and food industry and their applicability as well. Through intensive practical work in laboratories and through field courses, they confirm the adopted theoretical knowledge. The main aim and purpose of this study is to develop professional skills necessary for prompt integration of future experts into different branches of industry (chemical, food, metal, shipbuilding, construction industry, and other related industries) as well as small and medium-size businesses.
In addition to certificates and diplomas it is obligatory to issue the student a supplementary document about the study, which contains a list of all the exams passed and the marks pertained to, as well as the data on the teaching load and teaching matter.
At the FCT the programme for the postgraduate
doctoral study “Chemical engineering
in materials development and environmental protection” has been developed. The
study lasts 3 years (180 ECTS). Following
the elaboration and defence of doctoral thesis, the studies are completed and the
diploma and the academic title of Doctor of Sciences in Chemical Engineering is
awarded.
The programmes of all studies carried out at the Faculty are available
at the Faculty’s Internet site (www.ktf-split.hr).
Faculty lecturers carry out the described study programmes at the FCT (of which 30 in scientific-teaching vocation and 3 in teaching vocation) together with the assistants (23) and laboratory technicians (12). There are about 500 students at the Faculty.
APPLICATION AND ENROLMENT PROCEDURE

1. Entry requirements for University undergraduate studies
All applicants for the University undergraduate courses must be secondary school graduates from schools with four-year programs.
All applicants for the Professional studies must be secondary school graduates from schools with three- or four-year programs.
2. Applying for the classification procedure
All applications must be prepared in a specified form available from the Student Office of the Faculty and submitted either directly or by mail to the Faculty.
3. Classification Procedure
All applicants are evaluated based on the overall grade point average obtained during their secondary school education, as follows:
- grade A |
200 points |
- grade B |
180 points |
- grade C |
130 points |
- grade D |
90 points |
and average grades in Croatian Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as follows:
- grade A |
50 points |
- grade B |
40 points |
- grade C |
30 points |
- grade D |
20 points |
Maximum total points obtainable during the classification process based on the overall grade point average and average grades in specific subjects is 400.
Applicants with equal total points will be classified specifically according to the grades they obtained in Mathematics, Chemistry and then Physics.
Applicants who have met entry requirements for enrolment in the first round of the classification procedure, but have failed to enrol within the specified time period, will lose the right to enrol.
4. There is no classification examination to be taken.
Graduate studies are open to admissions from students who have completed undergraduate studies at the FCT and also the students of related faculties (Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Kinesiology, Food Technology, Textile Technology, Pharmaceutical-Biochemical and others). Graduates of professional studies (following the earlier programme) and students who are expected to graduate this year have also expressed interest in graduate studies. The manner and conditions of enrolment are currently being prepared and will be incorporated in the Book of Regulations on studies and studying. Attendance and exam schedule for the consolidation year shall be proposed for these students.
