Faculty of Chemistry
and Technology


The Faculty of Chemistry and Technology was founded in 1960. when the need arose for chemical and technological engineers. The then conditions of development of chemical industry indicated southern Croatia.

On July 7 1960, the Parliament of NR Croatia passed the Law on founding of the Faculty which was published in the "Narodne novine" No 31 of August 3 1960.

After that, the Council of the University of Zagreb appointed the Electoral committee consisting of professors of the Faculty of Technology in Zagreb: Miroslav Karsulin, D.Sc., Vjera Marjanovic-Krajovan, D.Sc., Ivan Filipovic, D.Sc., Ivan Lovrecek, B.Sc., Marijan Lacan, D.Sc. in order for them to elect the teachers and assistants for the new Faculty.

The Electoral committee appointed the following permanent teaching staff for the school year 1960/61: associate professor Bozena Pelech-Tucakovic, B.Sc., assistant professor Ivan Cesnik, assistant professor Milan Zglav, B.Sc., assistant professor Stjepan Lipanovic, B.Sc., and assistant professor Andjelko Damjanic, B.Sc., as well as the permanent assistants Ruza Krstulovic, B.Sc., Anka Zmikic, B.Sc., Klara Grzunov, B.Sc., Neven Bogdanic and Vesna Gotovac.

The inaugural meeting of the Faculty Council was held on October 10 1960, immediately followed by the meeting of the Faculty Board. On October 22 1960 the ceremonies inaugurating the Faculty of Chemistry and Technology and the Faculty of Electrotechnical Engineering were held in Split. Regular courses started two days later. Ihe introductory lectures were held by professors of the Faculty of Technology Zagreb: Miroslav Karsulin D.Sc. and Ivan Filipovic, D.Sc. Ivan Pernat, B.Sc. was appointed the first Chairman of the Council.

The associate professor Bozena Pelech-Tucakovic was elected the first dean, and assistant professor Ivan Cesnik was elected deputy dean.

Throughout its lifetime, the Faculty has kept courses for undergraduate (two- and four-year post-secondary school qualification) and graduate students ("Chemical engineering", "Chemistry and technology of macromolecules", and "Engineering chemistry" with orientations: "Polymeric engineering", "Chemical engineering", "Non-metal engineering and sea technology", "Electrochemical and electrothermal engineering").


Since its founding up to date, the following number of students graduated from this Faculty: 161 in vocational studies, 938 in university courses, 29 obtained master's degree, 24 obtained doctor's degree.
