Glossary
Ion | Ionization energy | Isoelectric point | Isomer | Isotope | IUPAC

Ion
Ion is atom or group of atoms that has a net positive or negative charge as a result of unequal numbers of positively (cation) and negatively (anion) charged particles.

Ionization energy
Ionization energy is the minimum energy required to remove an electron from an isolated atom or molecule (in its vibrational ground state) in the gaseous phase.

Isoelectric point
Isoelectric point is the pH of a solution or dispersion at which the net charge on the macromolecules or colloidal particles is zero. In electro-phoresis there is no motion of the particles in an electric field at the isoelectric point.

Isomer
In chemistry, isomers are the compounds that have identical molecular formulas but differ in the nature or sequence of bonding of their atoms or in the arrangement of their atoms in space. In physics, isomers are the nuclei of the same atomic number Z and mass number A but in different energy states.

Isotope
Isotopes are two or more nuclides with the same atomic number Z but different mass number A.

IUPAC
International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is an international organization devoted to the world-wide acceptance of chemical usages.
